freezing
This January set a record being
the coldest for 23 years! And it isn't over yet. The weather
forecast still predicts freezing temperatures the next week so
far.
My Shohin is in shelter but I
decided to take some of them in to a non freezing store, in
order to secure some watering for a while.
Actually, this is the first
winter in 15 years we had to take so much care in winter time.
I hope the winter will take a
rest soon, and also hope that the bonsai haven't suffered from
the severe cold this year.
Even the stone dragon had the
cold into its bones :-)

Black pine
needle thinning
Early to midd
winter is the time to thin the new needles on Japanese black
pines, Pinus thunbergii. The old needles was removed in
autumn, and the task now is to balance the energy of the tree
by reducing the number of needle pairs at strong branches and
twigs, so they balance with the medium strong growing branches.
Week branches (branches with few or short needles) are left
untouched.
